This summer is proving to be an exceptionally busy mosquito year due to the major spring rain events, followed by extremely hot and relatively dry weather across most of the country. Summit Responsible Solutions offers a few helpful tips regarding the use of our mosquito control products.

Facts
If you are experiencing a mosquito problem in and around your home, odds are there is water somewhere nearby. Here are some helpful pointers to locate these breading habitats to properly treat:

Tin cans, old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools or other containers that collect and hold water are perfect mosquito breeding habitat. If water is allowed to accumulate in the saucers of flowerpots, cemetery urns or in pet dishes for more than 2 days mosquitoes will most likely lay eggs and develop into mature, biting adults. Apply Mosquito Dunks® and Mosquito Bits® to containerized water for both rapid and long-term control.

Check rain gutters, under or around structures, or on flat roofs. Check around faucets and air conditioner units for leaks and puddles that remain for several days.

  • Birdbaths and wading pools should be checked at least once a week and ornamental and koi ponds.
  • Puddles, ditches and swampy areas, tree holes and stumps may be treated with either Summit Product.
  • Cisterns, cesspools, and septic tanks.
  • Standing water around animal watering troughs. The Mosquito Dunks are approved for use in livestock water troughs.

Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps used to cover boats, pools, etc. Apply either the Dunks or Bits for control if the water cannot be easily drained. Check around construction sites or do-it-yourself improvements to ensure that proper backfilling and grading prevent drainage problems.

Irrigate lawns and gardens carefully to prevent water from standing for several days.

If ditches do not flow and contain stagnant water for one week or longer, they can produce large numbers of mosquitoes. If these areas are within your property boundaries and do not flow into public wetlands and nature preserves, both the Dunks and Bits can be applied.

This is an excerpt from the American Mosquito Control Association website:

[Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) or S methoprene (IGR) containing products] under certain circumstances. Commercial products “Mosquito Dunks” and “Mosquito Bits” containing Bti can be purchased at many hardware/garden stores for homeowner use

Adult Control
Adult Mosquitoes prefer weeds and other vegetation to rest and wait for blood meals and typical biting periods. Typically, a large portion of this habitat is created through landscaping and planting of other desired foliage, and removal just isn’t an option.

Use Summit’s Mosquito & Gnat Hose-End Barrier Spray in conjunction with our Mosquito Repellant Coils to reduce suitable resting habitat and both mask and repel mosquitoes naturally attracted to you and your family.
